About the Ka‘ohekani Music Program at WCC
The Kaʻohekani Hawaiian Music Program at Windward Community College is a one-year, cohort-based certificate designed to train teachers across all subject areas to use music as a powerful tool for instruction and engagement. Grounded in the belief that mele can deepen learning, the program equips educators with practical strategies to integrate Hawaiian music into subjects such as science, history, language arts, and more - helping students connect to content through culture, creativity, and expression. Participants compose original songs for use in their own classrooms, transforming lessons into meaningful, culturally relevant experiences. This program, led by Dr. Kamuela Kimokeo, is deeply grateful for its partnership with the Henry Kapono Foundation, whose Hawaiian Music Scholarship helps expand access and opportunity for teachers and community members across Hawaiʻi.
