Basic Essentials Emergency Relief Program

Application Guidelines, Terms & Conditions – March 1, 2024

Program Priorities

The Henry Kapono Foundation (HKF) awards Gift Cards in the amount of $500 to benefit music industry professionals in the state of Hawai`i who are currently in unexpected financial hardship. The priorities are as noted:

  • Applicants must be a full-time Music Industry Professional of the State of Hawai`i for a minimum of 2 years

  • Applicants must be a resident of the State of Hawai`i for WAF2 and a resident of Maui for the WAFM

    • The Foundation does not accept applications from residents or Music Industry Professionals outside the State of Hawaiʻi.

  • Applicants must be complete and in compliance with the terms and conditions of the program as noted.

  • HKF does not accept incomplete applications 

  • When considering requests for the award, preference will be given to significant income loss of 50% or more to overall income and household needs.

  • HKF will award no more than one grocery card to an individual within a 12-month period for WAF2 and First come, first served for WAFM. 

  • Priority will be awarded to applicants who have not yet received an award for basic essentials emergency relief, that meets the established criteria.

  • An Applicant who has received an award may reapply for an additional Grocery Card:

    • After a 12-month grace period following the receipt of an award for WAF2.

    • Individuals applying for WAFM may really the month following their award. However, preference will be given to first time applicants.  

  • Program applications will be reviewed following the deadlines as noted in the guidelines, for consideration.

  • The term of the WAF Program will be January 1, 2023 - December 31, 2023.

Application Procedures for Online Submission: 

  • All applications must be submitted online. 

  • The application has four sections:

    • Applicant Profile: About You

    • About your Household

    • Medical Insurance Needs

    • Application Certification

  • Application deadlines are on the last day of each calendar month.

  • Applications submitted after the last day of each month will automatically move into the next submission period.

  • Only completed applications will be accepted.

  • The online application has fillable boxes with character limits. The character counts in MS Word may not match the character counts in the application. If you cut and paste your work into the application, please be sure your text fits the space provided.

  • To maximize character potential, please avoid the use of diacritical marks on the online application.

  • Approved applications will be kept active within the month it is submitted only.

  • Applicants can apply each calendar month if no award is received.

Applicant Profile Information

As part of the online application, your profile must be personally certified prior to submission of grant applications. Information needed to complete your profile includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Personal contact information

  • Estimated annual household income prior to this situation

  • Estimated household income in this situation

  • Number of members in your household: Adults, Dependents

  • Detailed, confidential description of the economic situation

  • Type of Music Industry Professional services conducted in the state of Hawai`i

  • Financial documents are not required; however, you will be asked to personally certify a detailed statement of this situation.

Deadlines

Applications must be submitted by:

  • January 1 - 31, 2024 for awards in February 2024

  • February 1 - 29, 2024 for awards in March 2024

  • March 1 - 31, 2024 for awards in April 2024

  • April 1 - 30, 2024 for awards in May 2024

  • May 1 - 31, 2024 for awards in June 2024

  • June 1 - 30, 2024 for awards in July 2024

  • July 1 - 31, 2024 for awards in August 2024

  • August 1 - 31, 2024 for awards in September 2024

  • September 1 - 30, 2024 for awards in October 2024

  • October 1 - 31, 2024 for awards in November 2024

  • November 1 - 30, 2024 for awards in December 2024

  • December 1 - 30, 2024 for awards in January 2025

Completed applications must be submitted by 5:00 pm (HST) on the deadlines indicated above. The application automatically closes in the Grants Portal on these dates/times.

Processing of Gift Card Award

  • Applications will be evaluated and awarded from the 1st through the 14th of the month following the deadline.

  • Award Letters will be emailed to the awardee with a request for a confirmation of receipt within a 7-day required return deadline

  • The gift cards will be distributed via U.S. Postal Service Certified mail to those qualified within seven days of being notified that you have qualified. 

  • A receipt of delivery signature will be required and you will be responsible for any individual signing/receiving this mail at the address you provide in your application.
